Stock Market Today: Dow Rises as Nasdaq Slips Ahead of Bank Earnings and Key Inflation Data

U.S. stocks were mixed on Monday as Wall Street prepared for a crucial week of bank earnings and inflation data, while renewed geopolitical tensions pushed oil prices higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained roughly 0.4%, or more than 220 points, while the S&P 500 hovered near the flatline and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.3%.

The uneven start followed a winning week that saw the S&P 500 and Nasdaq reach record highs. Investors are now weighing whether corporate earnings can sustain the rally as elevated borrowing costs, concerns about AI valuations and renewed energy supply risks threaten to complicate the fourth quarter.

Market Movers:

Bank Earnings Face a Major Test

Third-quarter earnings season kicks into high gear Tuesday, with JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo scheduled to report results. Investors are looking for evidence that corporate profitability can withstand elevated interest rates and a more uncertain economic environment.

Bank stocks have already come under considerable pressure. The KBW Nasdaq Bank Index has fallen more than 14% from its August peak, while major lenders including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America have suffered double-digit declines over the past month. Results and management commentary could determine whether the sector begins recovering or faces further selling.

Oil Prices Rise as Geopolitical Risks Return

Energy markets added another layer of uncertainty Monday. Brent crude climbed toward $106 per barrel, while WTI traded near $93 following renewed attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The stalled negotiations surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continue to threaten global oil supplies, raising concerns that elevated energy costs could keep inflation stubbornly high. For Wall Street, another sustained rise in crude could complicate the Federal Reserve's interest rate outlook just as investors prepare for fresh inflation data.

AI Stocks Face Fresh Competition Concerns

The technology sector also struggled as investors reassessed the competitive landscape for AI hardware. Micron and SK Hynix fell more than 3% after Chinese memory manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies announced progress on a new memory-cell architecture designed to increase storage density.

The development raised questions about future competition in the memory market, even as AI infrastructure spending remains strong. With valuations already elevated across much of the semiconductor sector, investors are becoming increasingly sensitive to developments that could threaten pricing power or future profit margins.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday's Consumer Price Index report will be the week's biggest economic catalyst, offering fresh insight into whether inflation is cooling or remaining stubbornly elevated. Retail sales data Thursday will provide another important measure of consumer resilience. Meanwhile, bank earnings will offer an early test of third-quarter corporate performance. With major indexes near record highs and oil prices rising again, investors will be looking for strong results and reassuring economic data to keep Wall Street's rally moving forward.
